Meet Richi the creator of Fungi Fruition

Richard is a self-taught mushroom lover, farmer, medicine maker, and consultant.

He focuses on sustainable practices to reduce plastic waste in mushroom cultivation. Previously he managed the Fungi Academy in Guatemala for 3 years, and is currently setting up a farm in Portugal at the Traditional Dream Factory.

"I recently attended a mushroom cultivation workshop with Richard, and it was a fantastic experience. We covered both theory and hands-on practice, exploring different methods for each step of the process. The atmosphere was relaxed and engaging, making learning feel natural and enjoyable. If you’re interested in growing mushrooms and want a well-rounded, fun introduction, I highly recommend this workshop!"

I absolutely loved the course! So much valuable information and so much fun. It honestly couldn’t have been any better.

The theory was explained excellently and put into practice in a way that was both detailed and personalized. My individual needs and plans were taken into account thoroughly. I now know how to cultivate mushrooms from spores, create liquid cultures, and even clone them. Everything is covered from start to harvest, and every question of mine got a answer.

-Sebastian

"There is a lot of info to take in from the course, but it landed well and concretised in me solidly despite the short duration of the course, thanks to Richi's knowledge and expertise and clarity in his delivery of the information and through the hands on exercises. The course was not only succinct and to the point, but all questions were answered and cleared up without ambiguity, and allowed for the information to concretise quickly.

1.5 day private course was structured thoughtfully after a discussion about my specific goals. The pdf guide that accompanies the course is just as solid, but actually going through the motions really helped to 'get it' fast."

FAQs

About the Course

Q: I'm a complete beginner with zero experience. Will I be able to keep up?
A: Absolutely. The courses are designed to take you from absolute zero to confident cultivator. We start with foundational concepts and build step by step. Our small group format means you'll get personalized guidance and hands on experience every step of the way. Most of our students arrive as beginners and leave already planning their first grow.

Q: I've tried growing before but struggled with contamination. Will this course help?
A: This is exactly why people with cultivation experience come to us. Contamination is the #1 frustration for home growers. We dedicate significant time to sterile technique, contamination identification, and troubleshooting. By the end, you'll understand why contamination happens and how to prevent it.

Q: What species will I learn to grow?
A: We focus on techniques that apply to most cultivatable mushrooms, but you'll gain specific experience with:

  • Oyster mushrooms (fast, forgiving, great for beginners)

  • Shiitake (the gourmet staple)

  • Lions Mane (medicinal powerhouse)

  • Reishi (immune support)

  • And techniques applicable to Sacred species as well.

Q: Will I actually get hands-on experience or just watch demonstrations?
A: You'll be working alongside us the entire time. This isn't a lecture—it's an intensive. You'll mix substrates, inoculate grain, pour agar, make liquid cultures, and innoculate bags you'll take home. By the end of the course, your hands will know what to do.

Q: What if I don't finish everything during the course?
A: You'll leave with a comprehensive workbook, liquid cultures, and access to our alumni community Telegram group chat. Plus, you'll have your own active project to continue at home. The learning continues long after the course ends, the relationships are built during our time together.

Logistics

Q: What should I bring?
A: Just yourself and curiosity. We provide all materials, cultures, substrates, and equipment. Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty (mushroom growing is hands-on work). We'll provide gloves, mask, and everything else needed for the course.

Q: Will I take anything home with me?
A: Yes! You'll leave with:

  • Actively growing cultures you started

  • Your own agar plates

  • An indepth PDF workbook

  • A certificate of completion

  • The confidence to start growing immediately

Q: What's the schedule like? Will we have breaks and meals?
A: For the 3 Day Intensives we run approximately 10am–5pm each day with a few breaks and lunch from 1-2. We'll have coffee, tea, and snacks available.

Q: Where exactly is the course held?
A: Each courses is held in a different location so please inquire to know more or search the exact course you would like to attend above.

Beyond the Course

Q: Can I really grow mushrooms at home without a lab?
A: Yes, and we'll show you exactly how. While we use professional techniques, everything adapts to home environments. You'll learn to create sterile conditions in small spaces, work with limited equipment, and scale to whatever space you have—from a closet to a garage.

Q: Will I be able to grow enough for regular use?
A: Absolutely. With the techniques you learn, a small space can produce pounds of mushrooms monthly. Many graduates supply their families, friends, and even start small local businesses.

Q: Is this course only for people wanting to grow food, or also for medicine?
A: Both. We cover edible cultivation thoroughly, and the dual-extract tincture module is specifically for medicinal use. If you're interested in lions mane for cognition, reishi for immunity, turkey tail for gut health, or sacred mushrooms for healing, you'll learn to produce your own high-quality medicine.

Q: What support do I get after the course ends?
A: You'll join our alumni community—a private group chat where graduates share wins, troubleshoot challenges, and keep learning together. We're actively involved and answer questions. You're not just taking a course; you're joining a community.

Q: I might want to start a small mushroom business someday. Will this course prepare me?
A: Many of our graduates have gone on to start successful small farms and businesses. While this course focuses on foundational skills, we discuss scaling, low-cost production, and what it takes to move from hobby to micro-business. We're happy to offer guidance on next steps.

A: We keep our groups intimate—maximum 10 students for the 3 Day intensives and maximum 18 students for our week long courses. This ensures everyone gets hands-on guidance and all your questions are answered.
